  Julian Plaza   1928-2003

Julian Julian Plaza

Julian Plaza - bandoneónist, pianist and composer, arranger for Troilo and Pugliese, died April 19, 2003.

His debut was at 15 as bandoneónist in Edgarto Donato's orquesta. Later he played in the orquestas of Miguel Caló (1949 -) and Carlos Di Sarli (1956 -59) ... which means he is playing on such great recordings as Nueve Puntos, Bahia Blanca and Fumando Espero. Then for the better part of a decade he joined the orquesta of Osvaldo Pugliese - for whom he arranged many songs.

He formed and lead the orquesta Sexteto Tango from 1968 until 1992 (in which he played piano).

Of course he was involved in many projects and with other major figures - from presiding over SADAIC for years to breaking new ground in collaboration with Leopoldo Federico, Atilio Stampone, Osvaldo Ruggiero and Emilio Balcarce.

His beautiful compositions include: Danzarín, Melancólico, Nostálgico, Nocturna, Transnoche and the exquisite performance milonga criolla, Payadora. Famous Plaza arrangements are A Fuego Lento for Horacio Salgán, Quejas de Bandoneón for Troilo, Danzarín, Nochero Soy, Mala Junta and La Mariposa and Milonga del 900 (with Osvaldo Ruggiero) for Pugliese.
