 Milongueros Conference in Buenos Aires

milonga2.jpg

You are invited to join me, Janis Kenyon, for a very special conference in Buenos Aires. I have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know and dancing with milongueros during the past nine years. These men have so many stories to tell about their nights in the downtown confiterias, cabarets, and clubs. They will talk about their experiences and demonstrate their personal styles. This is not a week of dance classes. It is a conference of personal conversations with the milongueros that will be translated for English speakers. I promise it will be a memorable experience for those who respect the traditions and culture of tango.

Milonguero Conference in Buenos Aires
February 19-23, 2008

What is a milonguero?

A milonguero is a self-taught dancer who developed his own personal style of tango. He can dance well with any woman, elegantly and creatively. Milongueros respect the codes and customs which have been an integral part of the milongas for decades. Milonguero was the lifestyle of men who lived for the night listening to music and dancing tango in the downtown confiterias, cabarets and clubs until dawn.

Who are the milongueros in this conference?

Alberto Luis Ayala (66), Mario Alan Candamil (78), Roberto Carreras (76), Osvaldo Vicente Centeno (70), Ernesto Jorge De Gouvea (73), Ernesto Ramon Delgado (72), Hector Carlos Delgado (77), Rodolfo Outeda (67), Roberto Angel Puyol (70), Carlos Alberto Rodriguez (71), Pedro Sanchez (72)

Who is invited to attend the conference?

Men who want to learn more about the history of the tango in the confiterias, cabarets, and clubs directly from those who have danced tango continuously since the 1950s. Your questions that will be answered by those with first-hand knowledge. You will leave with a better understanding of the tango culture and a deeper respect for the milongueros' contribution.

What is the format of the conference?

We will meet in the afternoon for hours of conversation with one or two milongueros. There will be opportunity to attend a milonga each evening after the conference. All the milongueros in the conference will be invited to join us on Sunday, February 24 for our Noche de Milongueros.

Will I be able to record or film the conference?

No. The milongueros do not want to be filmed talking or dancing since many have done so without their permission for use on the Internet and YouTube. You will learn more by listening and observing.

Where will the conference be held?

That will depend on the number of participants. It may be held in Fundacion Casa del Tango in Almagro if there is a group of 25 or more. You will be advised prior to the conference when registrations are paid.

How much is the conference registration?

The five days of conversations with milongueros is $125US payable in the equivalent of Argentine pesos within three days before the conference begins. Single sessions are $40US. Registration does not include admission to the milongas (12 pesos) or dinners with milongueros. Advance registration for the conference by email does not require payment.
