He was the
composer of 'Percal', 'Tristezas de la calle Corrientes' y ' Al compas del
corazon'. Talented bandoneonist, exquisite director, Maestro, he gave up
being a medical doctor when he opted for Tango by the end of the 1930's. He
was born in Palermo Viejo, Buenos Aires in 1916.
He took bandoneon lessons from Maestro Pedro Maffia at the same time as he
studied physiology with Bernardo Hussay (Nobel Prize in medicine). Played
bandoneon with the Miguel Calo orchestra. Homero Exposito wrote the lyrics
for many of his famous tangos, 'Percal', 'A bailar', 'Yo soy el tango',
'Yuyo verde', 'Tristezas de la calle Corrientes'. His Instrumental Classic
'Saludos' was written by him in only 15 minutes. When he learned that Juan
De Dios Filiberto took 3 years to end the musical bridge for his tango
'Caminito' he said " - he must have built the Verrazzano Bridge!")
He became independent in the 1940's and formed his own orchestra. Many
musicians that played with Miguel Calo ended up having their own orchestras,
(Enrique Francini, Armando Pointier, Osmar Maderna). His music was soft,
very elegant and beautiful for dancing.
He moved to Rosario (2nd. largest city in Argentina) because he married a
lady native to that city. He created his new orchestra and opened the
first academy in the world to teach bandoneon. He had a very productive
life, created La Orquesta Juvenil del Tango, (the youth tango orchestra) a
reincarnation of his music group of the 40's. He left many classic tangos,
a functioning, very successful school and a very good orchestra of young
musicians.
